About the artist
Kratu
Kratu was a multidisciplinary artist, born in Italy, who made Auroville his home from 1991 onwards. Art was his primary means of self-expression, and he found clay to be the perfect medium to convey form, movement, and mass. His magnum opus was a project exploring the four aspects of Shakti, a testament to his spiritual and artistic journey. Throughout his career, Kratu's fascination with the female form remained a constant theme. He began painting women in the 1960s, and later transitioned to stoneware sculpture in the 1980s, while living in Auroville. His work continued to evolve, influenced by the philosophy of the Mother at the Ashram, resulting in a diverse array of female figures that celebrate the beauty and strength of womanhood. Kratu left his body in 2024 in Auroville, India.
